What Makes MPTC Different?

The Maryland Proton Treatment Center is a state-of-the-art facility offering the east coast’s first fully integrated system of image-guided proton therapy (IGPT) and intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT). MPTC is the only proton center in Maryland, and is easily accessible from I95, I695, I83 and located within a 20 minute drive from BWI. Read below to learn why more than 2500 people have chosen MPTC.

The Most Advanced Treatment Available

The center is also one of only a few proton therapy facilities in the country to feature the advanced “pencil-beam scanning” technology in every treatment room. Pencil-beam scanning technology essentially paints the radiation onto the tumor like a 3-D printer for pinpoint accuracy.

Our Expert Team

MPTC physicians provide a unique level of proton therapy experience and expertise, with an average of 20 years of clinical experience and a combined 40+ years of proton therapy experience. Our high-quality, diverse team consists of top level dosimetrists, physicists, therapists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses and nurse practitioners with specialized training in the treatment of proton therapy patients. You can be confident that you are being taken care of by a world-class team of experts who are involved in cutting-edge research and clinical trials to ultimately help diagnose, treat and prevent cancer.

A Whole-Person Approach

MPTC offers an integrative wellness consultation with a nurse practitioner who will provide recommendations and resources to access services that can aid in healing and recovery. To schedule an integrative health consultation, please call 410-369-5222.

Hyperthermia

Since fall 2018, MPTC has offered hyperthermia therapy as a potential way to boost survival chances for patients. MPTC is the only center in the world to offer hyperthermia and proton therapy at the same facility, an advantage to patients because these therapies are typically given within an hour of each other. MPTC’s hyperthermia program is led by physician Zeljko Vujaskovic, MD, PhD, who received the 2016 J. Eugene Robinson Award from the Society for Thermal Medicine for his contributions to hyperthermic oncology. He has more than 20 years of experience in hyperthermia.

The University of Maryland Relationship

MPTC patients experience seamless, extensive cancer care because of MPTC’s affiliation with the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. This status means that UMGCCC is one of fewer than 50 premiere cancer research centers in the country. Considered a leader in the region, one third of newly diagnosed cancer patients in Maryland choose to be treated at a University of Maryland Medical System hospital. MPTC’s services are led by an experienced team of physicians at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology.

Varian

MPTC delivers the most precise form of proton therapy using pencil beam scanning technology from Varian, a global leader in developing and delivering cancer care solutions. MPTC has also partnered with Varian to create and deliver a diverse range of training and educational offerings targeted to physicians, medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists and administrators.  To date, more than 200 medical professionals have completed training at MPTC.

MPTC is currently the only multi-room center in the Northeast utilizing pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy in all treatment rooms, thus enabling clinicians to optimize the radiation dose to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.  Currently, MPTC is also the only multi-room center on the East Coast with cone beam CT (CBCT) in all rooms, allowing for better tumor visualization and more precise treatment.

Better Access to Care

Unlike some of the nation’s other proton treatment centers, MPTC has established a cost-neutral rate for treatment between protons and photons. Because of this affordable cost structure, MPTC currently has an insurance approval rate of 85%. Learn more about insurance here.

Concierge Services

MPTC’s concierge team provides a range of services free of charge to patients and their families, and can recommend resources such as the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge and the Ronald McDonald House. See what we offer.

Unique care for our youngest patients

Our Magic Castle program is a joyful symbol of hope for young patients at MPTC. When treatment begins, children place three wishes inside of the castle. When treatment is completed, a special ceremony is held.
