Cancer Research

New Ways to Fight Cancer

We are dedicated to research and finding new ways to better fight cancer at MPTC. This is evident by our many ongoing clinical trials. Our physicians have made advancements in radiation oncology and specifically in proton therapy.

In addition to the research happening at our center, we also partner with organizations that are dedicated to cancer research.

Keep Punching

Keep Punching is a local foundation that supports patients, healthcare providers, and researchers in their fight to prevent and eradicate brain cancer and minimize treatment-related side effects that may adversely impact function and comfort. Funds raised assist brain cancer patients and families; providers who are pursuing integrative approaches to healing; and researchers who are investigating traditional and complementary cancer-related therapies.

Lodging

As the most experienced proton therapy center in the region, we often treat people who travel to MPTC from out–of–town for care. Fortunately, we’re able to make lodging one less thing patients need to worry about by assisting with securing accommodations for those patients with one of our partner organizations.

The mission of the Ulman Foundation is to create a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. This Baltimore-based organization offers a housing program to create a home away from home for young adult cancer patients getting treatment at MPTC or other local medical centers, and their caregivers at Ulman House.

The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Baltimore offers guest rooms and a supportive environment for patients in cancer treatment and their caregivers. Each Hope Lodge community offers, private guest rooms and bathrooms, fully equipped community kitchens for food storage and preparation, close proximity to MPTC, committed staff members providing a nurturing and safe environment for guests, and more.

Since its opening in 1982, Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore has been home to more than 40,000 families in need. Their mission is to provide a home away from home for ill children and their families while they are in the area for treatment.

The following hotels offer discounts to those who are in town for treatment at MPTC:

Support Groups

A cancer diagnosis is a difficult challenge to navigate. Not only are there endless questions, but there is also the emotional toll that comes along with the disease. Even with supportive family and friends, having a community of people who understand cancer, can answer your questions, and just be there for you is invaluable.

HopeWell is an organization whose mission is to create a community for all people with cancer and their families and friends, that encourages an exchange of information, the development of a support system, and the presence of hope. They offer a broad range of programs and activities, including online support groups for all cancer types, caregivers, couples, and families. They also offer educational seminars, exercise classes, and social activities.

American Cancer Society is here to help, from basic information about cancer and its causes to in-depth information on specific cancer types, coping with side effects, or questions about health insurance.

Denise Durgin, former MPTC patient, felt that there was a lack of patient stories available to those also trying to learn more about proton radiation.  She launched Proton Radiation Buddy, dedicated to helping breast cancer patients learn more about proton therapy, and later in 2021 published a book, Prescription for Proton Radiation, so patients could learn more about the treatment and how to navigate the insurance approval process.

The purpose of the BOB is to provide an avenue for communications with former and current prostate cancer proton patients where members can share and/or learn about any subject related to their treatment, the healing process, and preventing a recurrence.
